Jewelry Repair

Important: Jewelry repair can be minimized by periodic inspection of your piece. Take a detailed look at your piece every two or three months or bring it in and have a professional look at it.

  1. Check to see if your jewelry is becoming dull or worn — a magnifying glass or jeweler’s loop can be helpful with this process. Look for areas on your piece that get constant rubbing, paying attention for any thinning or cracking of the metal, which could lead to larger problems in the future.
  2. Check your gemstones to see if they're tight and secure, using a pair of tweezers or a toothpick to see if you can gently move the stones. If so, bring it to a professional to have the stones tightened or remounted.

Hint: It is helpful if the jeweler can sketch out how the item will be repaired. If you are replacing or adding anything, a sketch will show you how it will look afterwards.

  1. When you pick up the item after a repair, check a few things before accepting it. First, make sure it is the right item. Second, make sure the repair was completed as specified. Third, make sure the jeweler completely polished and cleaned the entire piece — not just around the repaired area.
  2. If you have an older automatic or manual wristwatch you should wind it periodically to prevent an accumulation of dust or gumming up of the oils that help the watch run. Even if the watch is not in use, it should be wound once every other week.
